What do you do when you’ve built what might be the best-looking sports car on the planet? What do you do when that same car delivers goosebump-raising performance? And what do you do when it’s time, five years into its life cycle, for an update? When you’re Jaguar, and that car is the Jaguar F-TYPE, you proceed with caution.

But not too much caution. Case in point: the new base model for the 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE. As you’d expect, the design changes are minimal; they mostly have to do with giving the bumpers and air intakes slight tweaks from one trim to the next to better differentiate them.

But there’s something else that sets this base trim apart: a four-cylinder engine. Before you panic, let’s explore the capabilities of that engine a bit further.

It’s a twin-scroll turbocharged inline four-cylinder 2.0-liter Ingenium engine. If that seems somehow familiar, it’s because a nearly identical engine is found in the Jaguar XE and Jaguar XF sedans. Nearly identical, mind you. The key difference between them is a significant one. In the Jaguar F-TYPE, that engine is tuned for 296 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque.

In case you’re not familiar with the output figures for the Jaguar sedans, we’ll cut to the chase. This engine is more powerful, to the tune of 56 more horsepower and 44 lb.-ft. more torque. Because of that power and the eight-speed Quickshift automatic transmission to which the engine is paired, the 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE has a zero-to-sixty speed that’s a tenth of a second faster than the sedans with the same engine.

There’s more, of course, including a new version of Jaguar InTouch Pro and some new active safety technologies. But given the success of the Jaguar F-TYPE on so many levels, it’s hardly surprising that the company would approach this model year’s updates with a light hand.
