The 2018 Jaguar F-TYPE isn’t available yet to the drivers served by Jaguar Peabody. However, it will be here soon, keeping company with the Jaguar F-PACE that’s in stock now. While we’re waiting, we’ve been looking at what the automotive press has to say about the new four-cylinder trim on offer this year.
In case you missed it, the new trim is powered by a four-cylinder Ingenium engine. While it’s meant to be an “entry-level” version of the coupe and convertible, it’s still fierce. It backs its 296 horsepower with 295 lb.-ft. of torque, with the torque available starting at 1,500 RPM. While it doesn’t match the zero-to-sixty times of the V-8 powered Jaguar F-TYPE models, its 5.7 second time is still respectable.
There’s something else, too, and that something is at the heart of many of the reviews we’ve seen. While the exhaust note isn’t quite as assertive as it is with a high-displacement V-8 engine, this car still handles like a dream. That’s due in part to the engine packing plenty of punch. However, the lighter weight of a smaller-displacement engine plays a part, too. With less weight in the front end, there’s less to move, and better handling as a result.
Just as importantly, this car still looks gorgeous. While each trim has its own styling cues, the main thing that clues you into the smaller engine is a single exhaust instead of the dual exhausts found on the V-6 and V-8 models. All that, and you even get better fuel economy.
