When the Jaguar F-PACE debuted a couple of years ago, it was a major milestone for Jaguar, which had never had an SUV in its lineup. Some people worried that the move would represent a dilution of the brand’s values, or that an SUV wouldn’t deliver the same thrills that new Jaguar cars always had. They were wrong on both counts; it fits right in at Jaguar Peabody because it gets so much, so very right. And now it’s got company: the 2018 Jaguar E-PACE.
The Jaguar E-PACE is a compact companion to the larger Jaguar F-PACE and shares many of the same styling cues with its bigger brother. This is a good thing; Jaguar has never made an ugly car, so the familial resemblance is welcome.
Each of its trims (Base, S, SE, plus R-Dynamic variants of the S, SE, and an R-Dynamic HSE, and the limited E-PACE First Edition) gets the same 2.0L turbocharged 246 horsepower / 269 lb.-ft. torque four-cylinder engine in tandem with a nine-speed transmission, and each comes standard with all-wheel drive.
Cargo space is ample, ranging from 24.2 to 52.7 cubic feet (depending on seating arrangements). The variety of special features on offer is also ample even in base trim, but the upper trims are an embarrassment of riches. In addition to interior and exterior packages, there’s also All Surface Progress Control, Active Driveline, configurable and active driving dynamics, Touch Pro infotainment, and a head-up information display.
