The 2019 Jaguar I-PACE is getting lots of attention lately and it hasn’t even gotten to Jaguar Peabody yet. The positive reviews accumulate almost as fast as this new SUV’s zero-to-sixty time. Forbes calls it “seductive,” The Drive says it’s “so good it’ll keep you up at night,” and the Daily News declares it’s a “quiet kitty with a loud bite.” But the one label we’ve seen more than any other? “Tesla Killer.”

In a single word, no. The automotive press is prone to hype, especially when brands and their top competitors release a new model. We won’t be bitter; the Tesla brand does deserve credit for making electric cars catch on in the market and the popular imagination.

That said, we also need to acknowledge a few things that should be obvious but aren’t.

First, taste matters, and it’s highly subjective. Jaguar cars and SUVs have a decades-long heritage of design to uphold, and the company has done that heritage proud with the new Jaguar I-PACE.

Second, priorities matter. Lots of attention has been given to zero-to-sixty times, but any seasoned driver will tell you that the difference of a few tenths of a second in a straight line won’t be seen without a stopwatch. How it feels in the curves and overall driving dynamics also matter.

Finally, who’s your competition? There are dozens of automotive brands in the US alone, each with multiple models in their lineup. If we took the time to worry every time another competitor introduced another new car, we wouldn’t have time for anything else, including selling the new Jaguar models we love. Our focus is giving you the best vehicles, backed by the best service and ownership experience, that we possibly can.

You can’t drive hype. A great new Jaguar vehicle? That’s another story. Visit Jaguar Peabody at 247 Newbury St. for more information.
