Anyone who’s been a Boy Scout — and even several of us who haven’t been — remember their motto: “Be Prepared.” Even though the new and certified pre-owned Jaguar models sold by Jaguar Peabody are some of the safest cars on the road, emergencies can still happen that have nothing to do with car accidents. Luckily, putting an emergency kit together so you’re always prepared can be easy, quick and inexpensive. It can not only save you a massive headache, it could even save your life. Here are some simple steps, and simple items, that help.

First things first: your owner’s manual should be in your glove box. We also suggest downloading the owner’s manual to your smartphone. Charge your phone before you leave the house. Granted, your new Jaguar car comes with roadside assistance, or you may have AAA for your older car. However, you’ll have a hard time with that if your phone is dead.

Next, we also suggest buying either a backpack or duffel bag for these items so you don’t have a pile of loose things rolling around in your trunk or the cargo compartment of your 2017 Jaguar F-PACE. With a little creative packing, you can fit a lot more into a small bag than you think. Just be sure to pack food items separate from items like coolant and motor oil.

The other essentials:

  • Jumper cables or a portable battery charger (some use jumper cables; others can charge your battery through the cigarette lighter or 12 volt DC outlet)
  • Flares or triangle reflectors
  • One quart of motor oil
  • One gallon of coolant
  • Water
  • First-aid kit
  • Small Class B/Class C fire extinguisher
  • A blanket or space blanket
  • A flashlight, plus spare batteries
  • Tool kit
  • Tire pressure gauge and a can of sealant/inflator
  • Ice scraper
  • Granola or energy bars
  • Phone charger
  • Gloves
